8/10 Birmingham City man shines in Sunderland win, he ‘never appears rushed’

Birmingham City made it back to back wins on Saturday afternoon, with a 2-1 victory at home to Sunderland.

In front of a sold out St Andrew’s, it was the visitors who took a lead into half time, courtesy of a Jack Clarke goal.

However, Jordan James and Koji Miyoshi would both strike after the break, to make it another big win for Blues against on of manager Tony Mowbray’s former clubs, with a 2-1 win.

As a result, Birmingham City have now climbed to 15th in the Championship table, six points clear of the relegation zone.

Another player who once again stepped up for Mowbray’s side on Saturday, was Andre Dozzell, and his performance did not go unnoticed.

Andre Dozzell ‘gives Blues a new dimension’

QPR loanee Dozzell once again started for Birmingham City at St Andrew’s against Sunderland.

That decision by Mowbray to keep the midfielder in the starting XI, is one that was certainly vindicated.

Writing about Dozzell’s performance in the win over the Black Cats, Birmingham Live said: “The set pieces of Dozzell and Paik have given Blues a new dimension.

“The on-loan midfielder never appears rushed in possession and is happy to receive the ball under pressure. He keeps Blues moving forward.”

As a result, the 24-year-old was awarded a mark of 8/10 for what he did in that game.

Indeed, according to SofaScore, Dozzell completed two of his four crosses and both the long balls he played in that game, the most of any Birmingham City player in that match.

The midfielder also recorded a pass success rate of 87%, the third highest among those involved for Blues against Sunderland.

While he only had one shot, which was blocked, going forward, Dozzell also made a big contribution for Birmingham City defensively.

During the game, the QPR loanee also made three tackles, the most of any player for Mowbray’s side, while also completing one clearance and making one interception.

This therefore was yet another strong performance from Dozzell for Blues.

Birmingham City should look to sign Andre Dozzell permanently

It is probably fair to say that Dozzell has been something of a revelation since he arrived at St Andrew’s.

The midfielder has produced a string of consistently reliable performances for Birmingham City, becoming a key man for Mowbray’s side.

As a result, there must be a lot of appeal behind the prospect of making his loan move to St Andrew’s from QPR a permanent one.

Dozzell clearly fits this team really well, and they may need midfield depth come the summer. Ivan Sunjic and Gary Gardner are both out of contract in the summer. Jordan James meanwhile, will no doubt attract interest from elsewhere again.

Meanwhile, Dozzell himself is out of contract at QPR in the summer, which would also make this a financially sensible move for Blues as well.

With that in mind, this deal is one that would surely make a lot of sense for Birmingham City if they can make it happen.
