Remarkable Tony Mowbray and Wayne Rooney stat emerges after Birmingham City win

Birmingham City took another big step towards securing their Championship status for next season on Saturday afternoon.

That came with a 2-1 win over Sunderland, in front of a sold out St Andrew’s stadium.

After the Black Cats had taken a 1-0 lead into half time thanks to a Jack Clarke goal, Blues hit back emphatically after the break.

Goals from Jordan James and Koji Miyoshi completed a turnaround, to give manager Tony Mowbray a win against another of his former clubs.

As well as lifting Birmingham City to 15th in the Championship table, that has also brought to light a stat that highlights just how well Mowbray has done since taken charge of the club.

Following that win over Sunderland, it is now three victories, one draw and two defeats in six Championship games in charge of Birmingham City for Mowbray.

That of course, means Blues have amassed ten vital points under the management of the 60-year-old.

As Birmingham Live journalist Alex Dicken took to X to point out, that is as many points as Wayne Rooney during his time in charge of the club earlier this season.

However, as Dicken notes, Rooney was Birmingham City manager for 15 league games, nine more than Mowbray has overseen so far.

That of course, goes to highlight just how good a job Mowbray has done, since he took over in the dugout at St Andrew’s.

Tony Mowbray an excellent appointment for Birmingham City

Right from when he was appointed as Blues manager, bringing in Mowbray did look a very smart move by the club.

The 60-year-old has a vast amount of experience in this league, and has a proven track record of turning things around for struggling teams in the Championship.

As a result, it did seem as though he fit the criteria for what Birmingham City needed perfectly at the time of his appointment.

So far, that has certainly been backed up on the pitch. There have been some excellent performances, that arguably ought to have brought about even more points than they have already gained under Mowbray.

With that in mind, it is hard to see Blues sliding back towards the bottom three between now and the end of the season.

Indeed, if Mowbray is then backed by the owners in the summer transfer window, the next campaign could be a very exciting one for those of a Birmingham City persuasion.
