Birmingham City dealt fresh injury concern ahead of Sheffield Wednesday clash

Birmingham City are no strangers to injuries, with Blues having had a lengthy injury list for the past year.

It seems to be a common theme for Birmingham City, especially since the start of last season.

As it stands, Birmingham City have several players sidelined in Keshi Anderson, Lee Buchanan, Alfie Chang, George Hall, and Tyler Roberts, though one or two are expected to return for this weekend’s Championship clash vs Sheffield Wednesday.

And following the latest round of international fixtures, Birmingham City and boss Wayne Rooney have been dealt a fresh injury concern regarding Juninho Bacuna.

The Blues attacker is on international duty with Curacao this month and he featured in two matches against El Salvador, scoring an impressive goal in the first.

But in the second, the 26-year-old was forced off before full-time with Birmingham Live reporting that he had a collision with an El Salvador player, and that Blues are yet to discover the extent of his injury.

Bacuna’s season so far…

The Dutch-born attacker joined Birmingham City midway through the 2021/22 season and has since made 80 total appearances for Blues, scoring seven and assisting 11.

He impressed last time round scoring twice and assisting six, and it looked like he’d take his game to the next level under John Eustace this season.

But whilst he’s still been a decent player for Blues this season, he’s only managed one goal and two assists, playing in four of Rooney’s five opening matches and starting three of those.

The international break often springs up these kind of injury concerns for club managers, and Rooney will no doubt be frustrated at this.

Bacuna remains a key player and a versatile on too; he can don a number of positions on the pitch and during this early struggle, with Rooney trying to implement a more attacking way, he needs his key attacking players fit.

The extent of Bacuna’s injury is yet to be uncovered, but the early signs suggest that it’s nothing major.

Expect the club to run some tests upon Bacuna’s return to the country, whenever that might be, and expect a nervous wait for Rooney ahead of what is a real crunch match for Birmingham City this weekend.
