Sam Cosgrove is deemed surplus to requirements once again at St. Andrews as the Birmingham City striker looks set to depart the club on loan this season.
A host of League One sides had been linked to the 26-year-old, but it is Charlton Athletic who appear to have won the race according to Alan Nixon.
Alongside the Addicks in contention for Cosgrove’s signature was Derby County, Oxford United, Barnsley and Blackpool, however, it is Dean Holden’s side who have prevailed in their hunt of the Blues player.

Whilst on loan at Plymouth Argyle last season, he scored 12 goals and registered two assists in 40 appearances as he helped Steven Schumacher’s side become third tier champions.
His form for Argyle earned praise from Birmingham boss John Eustace who stated that Cosgrove was ‘great’ during the previous campaign, although the gaffer is still seemingly not convinced enough by his abilities to play in the Championship.
With Tyler Roberts, Scott Hogan and Lukas Jutkiewicz all ahead of him in the pecking order it was always going to be an uphill battle for the towering forward to cement a place in the team.
Having signed for the Blues from Aberdeen in 2021, Cosgrove has made just 14 league appearances and spent three loan spells away from the club.
Cosgrove’s plan
He first linked up with Shrewsbury Town in the 2021/22 season before joining AFC Wimbledon for the second half of that campaign, scoring three league goals in total.
Last season, as previously mentioned, was his Plymouth spell where he excelled – he will be hoping his fourth loan move with Charlton will have a similar script.
It remains to be seen whether or not Cosgrove’s long-term future lies at St. Andrews, though another impressive season in the third tier would do him no harm in trying to win Eustace over.
