Birmingham City receive mixed injury update on senior duo ahead of Millwall clash

Birmingham City will be looking to pull clear of the Championship relegation zone on Saturday afternoon.

Blues picked up a potentially important point on Tuesday night, coming from a goal down to draw 1-1 away at Hull City.

That has left them 20th in the second-tier standings. They are currently one point clear of the relegation zone.

Next up for Blues is a trip to The Den on Saturday afternoon to face another side battling to avoid relegation this season, in the form of Millwall.

With manager Tony Mowbray still away for medical reasons, Mark Venus will once again take interim charge of Birmingham City in this game.

Now, the stand-in Blues boss has issued a mixed update on the fitness of two of his players ahead of that match.

Marc Roberts and Krystian Bielik injury news

Two players that Birmingham City have had to do without in recent weeks are Marc Roberts and Krystian Bielik.

Roberts has missed the last two games due to a calf problem. Bielik meanwhile, has been suffering from groin and stomach issues.

That means he has not featured in the last three matches his side have played. Now, it seems as though the Pole could be out of action for some time yet.

There is however, better news for Birmingham City when it comes to Roberts, with the centre back closing in on a return to action.

Providing an update on the pair ahead of that game, Venus told The Birmingham Mail:

“Marc has trained today. We have to see how he reacts to training, hopefully he will train again tomorrow and he will hopefully be fit for selection. He is on the training ground so that’s good.”

“Krystian is injured until after the internationals. We reassess him after the internationals.”

Birmingham City need Marc Roberts and Krystian Bielik back fast

It is hard to avoid the sense that Blues need these two players back fit and playing as soon as possible.

Like Roberts, Bielik is also capable of playing centre back. Indeed, despite the fact he is perhaps more naturally a midfielder, he has done well in the centre of defence at times this season.

But with those two out, and Dion Sanderson one game into a three-match suspension, Birmingham City are now badly short on natural options at centre back.

Indeed, Emanuel Aiwu was their only natural option for that role against Hull City. Getting this duo back, with Roberts seemingly closing on a return, will be vital.

That should help to further solidify the Birmingham City defence, something which needs to happen as they look to stay in the division.

It will also give them more scope to rotate their options, and cope with the demands over the final weeks of the season.

As a result, this update on Bielik may be frustrating for Birmingham City. The news on Roberts though, is at least more encouraging.
