Birmingham City midfielder Alfie Chang has suffered a ‘significant’ knee injury in training.
The club confirmed the news on their website on Thursday morning, stating: “Chang will undergo a review with a specialist for further diagnosis and is scheduled for surgery in the coming days. He will work with the medical team at the Club on his rehabilitation programme.
“Everyone at Blues sends their thoughts to Alfie and wishes him a full recovery.”
Chang has been an unused substitute in all three of Blues’ opening Championship games. He made 13 appearances last season under the guidance of John Eustace.
He did however start the Carabao Cup match against Cheltenham Town, starting the game in midfield before moving to right-back after Marcel Oakley had to coke off with an injury.

Chang’s injury will come as a massive blow for Eustace, who is also having to contend with a number of short term injuries within his squad.
Blues’ currently have both of their right-backs injured in Ethan Laird, who came off in Saturday’s win over Bristol City, and the aforementioned Oakley.
Fellow summer signing Siriki Dembele also came off on Saturday with a muscle strain. Laird’s injury was also a muscle strain.
Centre-back Marc Roberts is also out injured, and has not featured so far as he is recovering from a calf injury. Tyler Roberts is also out with a calf injury and is not expected to be back until next month.
George Hall has also been unlucky in 2023, remaining out with an ankle injury.
Birmingham will hope to continue their good start despite their injuries when they host Plymouth Argyle on Saturday at St Andrew’s.
