Former Man United boss reveals how he almost signed Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City

Birmingham City may have only had him in their senior side from one season, but Jude Bellingham is not a player they are ever going to forget.

The midfielder of course, came through the academy ranks with the Blues. His performances in the first-team during the 2019/20 season, would then attract plenty of attention from elsewhere.

That saw him move to Germany in the summer of 2020, signing for Borussia Dortmund.

After three years there in which he became a key part of their side, the former Birmingham City man then headed to Real Madrid last summer.

Since that move, Bellingham has also become just as important for Los Blancos, while he is already integral for England at international level too.

However, it seems things could have gone rather differently for the now 20-year-old following his departure from Birmingham City, judging by the latest comments from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaks on Jude Bellingham pursuit

Prior to signing for Borussia Dortmund, Bellingham had plenty of other parties seemingly interested in his signature.

One of those to be linked with him was Manchester United. At the time, the Red Devils were managed by Solskjaer.

He has now revealed the lengths the club went to, in an attempt to sign Bellingham from Birmingham City.

The Norwegian was recently a guest on the Overlap, where he spoke with his former Manchester United teammates Gary Neville and Roy Keane, as well as Ian Wright, Jamie Carragher and Jill Scott.

During his appearance, Solskjaer spoke about his talks to sign Bellingham from Birmingham City, saying:

“He knew what he wanted. Jude, he was in the building and you can’t ask for a lot more for a midfielder because I was there obviously as the manager. Sir Alex (Ferguson) was there, Roy should have been there, but you weren’t! Bryan Robson was there and (Eric) Cantona was there that day when he came to the club.

“So we all spoke to him and of course we sold it to him as well as we could, but he knew what he wanted. X amount of minutes in the first-team, that’s it. The most mature 17-year-old I’ve ever met in my life, he had it planned out.”

Birmingham City fans may feel Jude Bellingham made right call

It could be argued that Bellingham made the right decision in picking Borussia Dortmund over Manchester United.

The midfleder clearly knew he wanted to play regular football, if he was to leave Birmingham City.

With his move to Germany, he has certainly been able to get that. In turn, it has now given him the opportunity to play for one of the top clubs in the world.

He is now thriving there, and looks set to get the chance to lift some of the biggest trophies in the game.

By contrast, Manchester United have largely continued to stutter in the years since they attempted to sign him.

A move there, could consequently have prevented the midfielder from realising his full potential, certainly as quickly as he has done.

With that in mind, it appears Bellingham made the right call when choosing his next destination after Birmingham City.
