‘Serious doubts’… Birmingham City handed damning relegation verdict ahead of Watford

Birmingham City find themselves in a very precarious position in the Championship table right now.

Blues have taken just one point from their last five games, since Tony Mowbray temporarily stepped back from his role as manager for medical reasons.

Most recently, they have slipped to back to back 1-0 defeats to Millwall and Middlesbrough. The latter of those came in a key game in hand on Tuesday night.

As a result, Birmingham City are currently 21st in the Championship table, just one point clear of the relegation zone.

Now, there appears to be some concern that recent performances could see the club dropped into League One for next season, if they do not improve.

Birmingham City given ‘play like that’ warning

Given their position in the table, there are understandably some who are nervous about the threat of relegation around St Andrew’s right now.

It also seems as though the performances in recent matches, have done little to alleviate the fears of some followers of Birmingham City.

Speaking on The Keep Right On Podcast, Brian Dick was asked if he thinks Blues can avoid relegation this season.

Responding to that question, the reporter said:

“On the evidence of Millwall and Middlesbrough, then I have serious doubts. If you put me on the spot I’m not going to just ‘yes they have got enough’.

“Because I’d be lying if I didn’t have doubts after Tuesday night, I have got doubts. If they play like that for the next nine games, then I don’t think they are staying in the division.”

Next up for Birmingham City is the visit of Watford to St Andrew’s on Saturday afternoon.

Blues need a quick reaction to recent form

It is hard not to get the sense that the possibility of relegation is becoming even more real for the club.

Middlesbrough themselves were not exactly impressive with their performance at St Andrew’s on Tuesday night.

But despite that they were always in control of the game, and anything other than an away win never really looked likely.

Indeed, Birmingham City hardly looked like threatening the ‘Boro goal on Tuesday. Given the position they are in, that is a major concern for the Blues.

Now, they face another huge match this weekend. Watford are badly out of form, having won just once in their last ten league games.

That has led to the sacking of Valerien Ismael, with Tom Cleverley being placed in temporary charge of the Hornets.

As a result, this game does look like one that presents Birmingham City with an opportunity to get three big points on the board.

It is therefore vital that they offer more than have done in recent games, in order to take that chance.

If they are unable to do that, then there will be serious questions asked of everyone involved at St Andrew’s, about how they are going to get out of this situation.
