Wayne Rooney reveals his Birmingham City transfer ‘hope’ after Rotherham draw

Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney has predicted that there will be comings and goings at the club in the next few months.

Rooney has not had a great start to life at Birmingham City.

Now eight games into his tenure, Rooney has just one win and two draws to his name, with Blues now sitting in 15th after a disappointing draw at home to Rotherham United today.

It was another crunch match for Rooney who got his first win against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, followed up by a 4-2 loss at Blackburn Rovers in the week.

Rotherham, who are without a manager, left with a credible and deserved point in the end, piling more misery and pressure on the under-fire Birmingham City boss.

Wayne Rooney predicts Birmingham City movement

Birmingham City spent well in the summer. And after their positive start under former boss John Eustace, it looked like their recruitment was well-planned.

But Rooney’s tenure so far has highlighted new flaws in the team, and speaking to Birmingham Live after the game, the Blues boss says that he hopes there will be comings and goings in the coming months.

Rooney said:

“My job is to improve them as players. Within the next six months, I hope there will be changes. You want to bring players in, players will leave the club.

“It’s important we don’t get carried away, we have got a lot of good players. The team I selected today should win that game. The team is good enough to win that game and we haven’t won the game because we got complacent.”

Where for Blues need to strengthen?

At the start of the season, it looked like Blues had depth and quality across the pitch.

But since Rooney has come in, the defence has been woeful, and it looks like a new centre-back is needed more than anything right now.

Emanuel Aiwu has come under criticism for his recent performances and so too had Sanderson, who was a rock at the back for Birmingham City before.

Kevin Long’s absence is a miss and his eventual return will be a boost, but it certainly seems like Birmingham City need defensive additions.

And Rooney has some good attacking players at his disposal in names like Siriki Dembele and Jay Stansfield, but Blues are poor in attack, failing to score against a weak Rotherham side today.

Stansfield isn’t getting enough service and so Rooney might look to add players who can do that.

But interestingly, it looks like there could some players leaving in the January window. Rooney’s comments suggest that there’s a few who doesn’t favour and who he thinks should be moved on.

January will certainly be an interesting a pivotal month for the club.
