Wayne Rooney wants son of former England man as first Birmingham City signing

Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney is keen on signing Wrexham man Elliot Lee in January, reports The Sun.

Birmingham City had a busy summer transfer window, and after a poor start to life under Rooney, they could be in for a busy January transfer window as well.

Soon after Rooney’s appointment, a handful of Birmingham City transfer rumours came out, though the latest comes from The Sun who say that Blues and Rooney are keen on Wrexham man Lee.

The former West Ham, Barnsley, and Luton Town midfielder joined Wrexham last season. This season though, the 28-year-old has shone in League Two with 10 goals and two assists to his name already.

Who is Elliot Lee?

Lee began his career with West Ham. He made two league appearances for the Hammers, spending the bulk of his time there out on loan.

Then after a season at Barnsley, the Englishman – who is the son of former Newcastle United and England man Rob Lee – made his name during a five-year spell at Luton Town.

Lee made more than 100 appearances for the Hatters and scored 27 goals from midfield before joining Wrexham in 2022, eventually helping them on their way to promotion from the National League.

Would Lee be a good fit for Blues?

Birmingham City haven’t scored enough goals this season. They’ve scored just 18 goals in their opening 15 league fixtures, with only two of them coming under Rooney’s watch.

So Rooney needs to add some firepower in January and Lee would do exactly that; he’s a versatile attacking midfielder with an evident eye for goals, and experience of playing up and down the Football League pyramid.

He might not come cheap with Wrexham gunning for promotion and having a fair bit of money themselves, so they’re perhaps not in a position where they need to sell.

What’s more is that Blues don’t really have too many goal-scoring midfielders on their books this season, so someone like Lee could be a really shrewd January addition.
