Birmingham City hailed after ‘vital victory’ at Cardiff City on Wednesday night

Birmingham City won 1-0 away at Cardiff City last night thanks to a Juninho Bacuna goal just before half-time.

Bacuna scored the goal that earned Birmingham City and Wayne Rooney a hugely important win in Wales last night.

Pressure was on the Blues boss before last night’s game, and there remains a good degree of heat on the former England striker, but last night’s win certainly eases some of that pressure.

It was a commanding performance from Birmingham City who earned just their second win under Rooney and only their second clean sheet under his watch too.

The three points leaves Birmingham City in 16th ahead of a visit from league leaders Leicester City next week.

Brian Dick hails ‘vital’ Birmingham City win at Cardiff

Three points is three points. But last night’s win seems to be more than just three points for Rooney and his Birmingham City side.

It’s a win that instils some belief into the fanbase that Rooney can be the man to take Blues forward.

He’s faced growing criticism so far and whilst he’s not out of the woods yet, we saw a lot of positives from his side last night, and it’ll give him and his players a new standard going froward.

After the game, journalist Brian Dick reacted to the win, posting on X:

A tough test against Leicester City coming up

Last night’s trip to Cardiff City was a tricky one.

Cardiff are enjoying a good season and so leaving with all the points is a huge result.

But for Birmingham City, the visit of table-topping Leicester City this weekend will be an altogether different challenge for Rooney and his players.

The Foxes have a distinct, possession-based style of play with quality all over the pitch, and it could arguably prove to be Blues’ toughest test of the season so far.

For Rooney then, he’ll need a different kind of preparation for this one, but going into it on the back of a big win will certainly give him and his players a newfound confidence on Monday night.

Birmingham City will need to find a way of conserving energy and breaking at the right time; exactly what Leicester City do, which is what makes them such a dominant force to play against this season.

Another win would be a huge result for Rooney and a true sign of changing times at Birmingham City, though it’ll certainly be a hard win to come by.
