Wayne Rooney reportedly keen to land ex-Arsenal prospect at Birmingham City

Birmingham City have been credited with an interest in ex-Arsenal youngster Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill.

Birmingham City look like they could be gearing up for a busy January transfer window after struggling to adapt to life under Wayne Rooney.

He’s taken just five points from his opening eight games in charge and the pressure seems to be rising as we approach this congested festive period.

But Rooney hopes to see some changes made to the playing squad in January, should he make it through to January, and left-back Ormonde-Ottewill could be one of his first signings according to Football Insider.

Who is Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill?

The 27-year-old spent more than a decade in the Arsenal ranks, but never made his Premier League debut for the club.

After a spell with Swindon Town he ventured into Europe, having since played for all of FC Dordrecht, Excelsior, and now Hungarian outfit Puskas Akademia.

Ormonde-Ottewill though is coming into the final six months of his contract and Football Insider have claimed that the Sutton-born player is attracting interest from Birmingham City, as well as MLS duo Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC.

The report says that Blues are ‘ready’ to offer Ormonde-Ottewill a return to English football.

Do Birmingham City need another left-back?

Defence certainly looks like the area which Rooney will first look to bolster in January.

Blues have been shocking at the back and names like Dion Sanderson and Emanuel Aiwu have really failed to impress in this new system.

Centre-back then looks like the priority position to bolster.

Lee Buchanan is back in the side and he’s a solid option at left-back, but Manny Longelo is his back-up and he failed to impress in his first few outings under Rooney.

So back-up in the left-back position could be useful, but it doesn’t seem totally necessary, and with Blues unlikely to spend huge amounts in January, they need to focus their attention elsewhere.

Rooney needs a centre-back who is more composed on the ball and better-able to move forward with it without losing possession.

Finding one won’t be easy, but expect Birmingham City to back Rooney should he remain in the job; a few more poor results could quickly result in his departure, with Blues having plummeted down the table in recent weeks.

Up next is a short trip to Coventry City on Friday night, in what is another crucial game for Rooney and Birmingham City.
