Birmingham target Wayne Rooney as potential Eustace replacement

Birmingham City are looking at Wayne Rooney as a replacement for manager John Eustace, should he leave.

According to John Percy from the Telegraph, Rooney has emerged as a target for the board at Birmingham as they start to look at potential replacements for Eustace.

It was reported on Wednesday morning that Eustace is being targeted as a potential replacement for Michael Beale for Rangers, with Beale’s position under pressure in Glasgow.

Would Rooney be a good replacement?

Losing Eustace would not be ideal for Birmingham after an impressive start to the 23/24 campaign, going into the September international break unbeaten in the Championship, and sat in the play-off places, two points off of Preston North End at the top of the table.

Eustace managed to keep Birmingham up last season despite working with a limited budget and changes behind the scenes, whilst also integrating plenty of young players such as George Hall.

Eustace has also impressed in coaching roles with Queens Park Rangers and the Republic of Ireland. He was subject to interest from fellow Championship side Swansea City last season.

Whilst Eustace would be a big loss, Rooney would, on paper, not be a replacement worth Birmingham fans getting excited about. He is currently managing DC United in the MLS, where they currently are ninth in the Eastern Conference.

He last managed in England in 2022 with Derby County, as he couldn’t save them from relegation to League One following a 21 point deduction. He resigned over a month after due to the club still being in administration at the time, leading him to make the move to the MLS a month after leaving Derby.
