Wayne Rooney hints at major Birmingham City injury boost ahead of January

Birmingham City look set to have some returning players in the coming weeks.

It’s been a tough couple of months for Birmingham City.

Since Wayne Rooney‘s arrival back in October, Blues have won just two games, taking just eight points from a possible 33.

The last two performances have given fans reason to believe that Rooney can eventually steer Birmingham City to success, though there’s a long way to go still.

And injuries haven’t helped Rooney’s cause either.

He’s seen a number of players pick up knocks in the past few weeks, but ahead of the New Year, it looks like those in the treatment room are nearing returns.

Wayne Rooney reveals Keshi Anderson and Tyler Roberts boost

Two notable absentees over the past few weeks have been Keshi Anderson and Tyler Roberts.

Both joined in the summer and Anderson looked like a really good capture, with his absence certainly a blow for Rooney as he looks to establish a more attacking Birmingham City side.

Roberts has only made one Championship appearance since joining from Leeds United in the summer, but still, his eventual return will bolster Rooney’s attacking options.

Rooney said of the pair:

“We’ve had Keshi and Tyler in the group. They have been training so that’s really positive.

Rooney then revealed that defenders Cody Drameh and Kevin Long are also on the mend, adding:

“Cody and Kev Long will be some time over Christmas. They are not back on the grass yet, but they will be some time over Christmas. We’re starting to get to a big squad.”

A positive 2024 on the horizon for Birmingham City?

Although the win against Cardiff City and the performance vs Leicester City are just two games, Birmingham City looked like a new team in both games.

The Cardiff game was the best that Blues have played under Rooney and then they went toe to toe with Leicester, and were perhaps unlucky not to take something from the game.

So matters on the pitch seem to be improving and Rooney has a game against a managerless Plymouth Argyle side to look forward to this weekend.

Then with Anderson, Roberts, Drameh, and Long all returning hopefully soon into the New Year, it all of a sudden gives Rooney some good options,

Anderson especially has been a miss; his overall presence in attack with his speed and range of passing could be decisive for Rooney at Birmingham City, whilst having a player of Roberts’ versatility and pedigree in attack can only be a boost.

The experienced Long meanwhile could also be a big plus for Rooney, who’s seen his side struggle defensively in recent weeks, whilst Drameh will be another obvious boost.

It’s been tough so far Rooney, but things are steadily starting to look up.
